“It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.”
— Dale Carnegie
It’s no secret that we all strive to be happy. From the moment we wake up in the morning until the second before our eyes close for the night, the majority of us judge whether our time was positive or negative based on how happy we were during it.
But instead of just hoping to be happy, there are certain simple steps we can take to make ourselves happier every single day. Here are just a few.
1. Take a dance break
This is exactly what it sounds like. E-mails are zooming in, your to-do list is getting longer and time seems to be speeding up. It’s probably the worst time to get up and do a jig, right? Wrong. Taking a dance break to shake off all the stress is one sure way to keep your mood light.
2. Be grateful
It may sound difficult to find something you’re grateful for when there’s a ton going on, but it’s really not. You can focus on something as subtle as the sunshine. Concentrating on the positive – no matter how small – is bound to change up your energy for the better.
Seriously. Science has proven that with a smile, you can literally trick your brain into thinking you’re happier than you actually are. I highly recommend doing this the next time you find yourself in an argument with someone. Not only will it save your mood, but the other person will be super confused and it’ll be hilarious.
4. Give someone a compliment.
When you’re feeling down, try saying something nice to somebody else. Watching their energy lift as a result of something you said might just have a contagious effect on you.
