What to Watch

Dear Friend,

If this is the first time you are opening a message from me, you may not know that one of the primary reasons I launched Conscious Good is because I wanted one place where I could trust that all of the media I experienced would not only be high quality and entertaining, but also inspire and enhance my daily mind-body-spirit practice.

As the Buddha said, “You are what you think”. If I’m not careful with my media diet, I can fall down the rabbit hole of thinking, “there is no hope, why bother trying”? Approximately fourteen years ago, a documentary film was released that challenged us to harness the power of our thoughts to create our best lives. It was called, ‘The Secret’, and I remember watching it several times, eagerly digesting its inspiring ideas. But I needed to watch it several times to allow the concepts to really stay with me.

Then a few months ago, the producers of ‘The Secret: Dare to Dream’, a narrative version of the concepts behind the original documentary, allowed me an early viewing of the film. I admit, I was skeptical. It felt like they had an apple and now they were trying to sell an orange. But I put my skepticism aside and watched the film with an open mind. My reward was not only an entertaining film, but one that stayed with me far longer than the documentary. The main characters worked through their challenges using the concepts from the documentary in unique but relatable ways. For several days after I watched the film, I kept recalling more details of the story and how I could respond similarly to situations in my own life.

This experience reinforced what I always held to be true: the power of narrative story to transform lives. This is why the Greeks had myths and Christ spoke in parables. It is why Conscious Good is committed to offering, not only quality documentary films, but also entertaining narratives.

Do you agree that narrative storytelling can be more impactful than documentary films?

I’d love to hear from you on our private community platform, the Conscious Good Creators Network.

The Secret – Dare to Dream

Film Review by Lorraine Hess

Starring Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas, ‘The Secret: Dare to Dream’ is inspired by the phenomenally successful 2006 book, ‘The Secret’, by Rhonda Byrne. The wildly popular book has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 50 languages. Aficionados will know about the book’s philosophy based on the Laws of Attraction principles. Put simply, like a magnet, our thoughts and feelings create powerful energies – if we are pessimistic, we draw in negativity, if we think positively, we pull in positive outcomes. According to the book, through creative visualizations, and the practice of gratitude, we can create what we really want from life.

Mark Allan Kaplan’s recommends ‘UnDone’, “This little hybrid animated gem uses multi-layered complex storytelling to take us on a cinematic trip into multiple dimensions of being and becoming and consciousness…and most resonant to the now…it explores the “Undoing” of our reality and that liminal space created by that undoing.”
