Here’s Something to Help Your Dad Grow This Father’s Day

Father’s Day is coming up quickly, and if you’re anything like us, you’ve left your gift getting until the very last minute. There’s a good chance you’re scrambling to find a present he might use on Amazon. Sure, you could go with the automatic wine opener or a few new ties. But what if you could give the father figure in your life something more meaningful – something that would help him to grow as a human being? (Yes, even our seemingly all-knowing dads still have room to grow).

Whether he’s a football maniac, an aerospace nerd or a rough-around-the-edges oldschooler,  the gift of mindfulness is something that every dad can benefit from – whether he knows it or not. Here are four videos that you can share with your dad this Father’s Day to introduce a mindfulness practice or inspire change and growth.

1. Slomo

This video will resonate with the dad who might be aching for a job change. Depressed and frustrated with his life, Dr. John Kitchin abandoned his career as a neurologist and moved to the beach. There, he underwent a radical transformation into SLOMO, trading his lab coat for a pair of rollerblades and his IRA for a taste of divinity. This could be the inspiration your dad needs to make a big transformation in his life.

2. The Reinvention of Normal

Has your old man lost some of the creativity that was once a staple for him? The Reinvention of Normal might inspire him to bring some of it back. The film follows Dominic Wilcox, an artist, inventor, and designer, on his quest for new ideas … Taking the normal and turning it into something unique – all with the support of his own dad.

3. Le Gouffre

Any adventurer dad will appreciate Le Gouffre. In it, two travelers undertake the construction of a gigantic bridge in order to cross a gulf blocking their way, inspiring a rural community living nearby with their courage and determination.

4. Body Scan for Sleep

We’d be willing to bet major moola that any dad will benefit from this one. Body Scan for Sleep will help dad to quiet his mind before bed, allowing him to fall into a sounder sleep faster. Diana Winston is the Director of Mindfulness Education at UCLA Semel Institute’s Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) and the co-author, of Fully Present, the Science, Art and Practice of Mindfulness (DaCapo, 2010). She has taught mindfulness since 1993 in a variety of settings including hospitals, universities, corporations, non profits, and schools in the US and Asia. She developed the evidence-based Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) curriculum and the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation, which trains mindfulness teachers worldwide. So if your dad is someone who needs scientific backing to try something new for his health, you’ve got him covered with this one.
