Spirituality remains a concept and a philosophy until I make it personal. How do I become more spiritual? Not just in knowing about it, but in living it practically such that my life reflects the values that are innate in the self. In this section Sister Jayanti takes us to the heart of spiritual study and practice: the self, God, karma and practice.
Once we've been able to look at the same thing from a different angle, then maybe we're going to find some solutions.
Ethics and values are connected with the spirit within, and spirituality means exploring my own being within.
If your actions are going to be fear based, what happened to love? What happened to being able to see my neighbor, and loving my neighbor?
Will it help my child to buy him a gun? Or am I instilling in the child the pattern of behavior of reacting with violence, which is going to bring more violence?
I decided that I'd start my spiritual education by going to the Brahma Kumaris, and I met Dadi Janki, and she talked to me about conscience.
They say that 80% of the time our thinking is based on the patterns that we created between birth and seven years of age, and it said we're on automatic pilot most of the time, just reacting.
My own understanding and experience is that every human spirit starts with goodness, and this is what gives me hope for the future of humanity.
God isn't something that's mystical. But, in my very simple understanding it means there is one soul who is supreme, because that soul has all the attributes to their maximum extent.
I think you have to ask your own conscience. If I believe in a divine, and yes I do, the next question, what are the qualities of the divine that make God divine?
I didn't start off with belief. My belief came as a result of understanding and experience.
All the political crises that we're thinking about, and the injustice that seems to be happening, again to me it's because our moral compass is not aligned.
If I want to experience spiritual power in my life, if I want to experience that transformation, and a return to my own original goodness, then I have to be a little bit disciplined.
I hold that awareness of myself as a being of peace, and connect with the divine, because if I want to serve the world and share peace with the world.
If I'm not willing to change, and I'm stuck with the things that I'm holding on to, I can't change the world. This is why when we say that I have to be the way I would like to see the world to be. My change is going to make that happen.
Where I don't forgive, more than likely, others around me are not going to forgive me either. There's a mechanism, a subtle mechanism of energy that's at work. I forgive. Others will forgive me.
Spirituality reminds me that whatever it is I've put out is going to come back to me. It's the cause and effect, the boomerang story, karma.
What spirituality is saying is move on, move on. If you hold on, even in your memory to the past, you're going to be emerging those same feelings and you're more likely to repeat the same mistake. Let go. Move on.
Can I do something differently? Can I make a shift and a change in my life? If I'm unwilling to do that, and I'm unable to make the shift inside and accept, then I have to ask, Why am I choosing to be a victim?
We are the creators. We've created this world as we see it, but it's up to us to change ourselves and create a different type of world.
Is it possible for me to stay connected with the divine so that God's light, peace, and love is able to reach across the world and those who are ready are able to take it?
Whilst I'm in the mode of blame and complain, I have no impact on the situation whatsoever.
If I can be an instrument, connect and let that power work and do the things that need to be done, then I get the blessings but I don't get exhausted.
My first thought was I'd like to go straight back to the airport and go. I don't want to see this. I don't want to deal with it.
Having an elevated thought is one step, but becoming an elevated soul is something else.
